Larkin And Lacey Turn Frontera Fund Against Arpaio Legacy

While 2016 may have been discouraging for some with the election of Donald Trump as president, it was encouraging for others with the end of Joe Arpaio’s time as sheriff of Maricopa County, Arizona.

Arpaio’s legacy will certainly not be forgotten by many in Phoenix including the former CEOs of Village Voice Media, Jim Larkin and Michael Lacey. The two journalists fought Arpaio especially over issues related to immigration and were often in the crosshairs of the sheriff’s department whenever they published news articles he didn’t like.

Arpaio had violated a judge’s order related to immigration that had come after years of hearings in the Maricopa County Court, but upon hearing this President Trump elected to pardon Arpaio.

Larkin and Lacey and their associates remarked that they were disappointed in the president’s decision and that it really showed the flaws in the US justice system. But they had already started the Frontera Fund and they pledged that the foundation would raise even more money to help immigrants with issues affecting their community welfare.

Jim Larkin and Michael Lacey both dropped out of college because they were making money publishing their Phoenix New Times paper through the Village Voice Media company they had setup. It got started back in the early 1970s when Lacey, a staunch critic of then President Nixon started criticizing his actions in Vietnam and joining in the protesters.

Though the protests were tainted by stories such as the Kent State Massacre, the two men would go on the front lines to get actual action reported in their columns. But the early 1970s were just the beginning as Larkin and Lacey built up their conglomerate.

They discussed a lot of issues concerning politics and events such as the fall of the Soviet Union to the Enron scandal of 2001, but their battle with then Sheriff Arpaio took center stage in the mid-2000s.

A story published about Arpaio’s use of public funds in the department and possibly for personal use angered the sheriff who decided to try and frame the two men to get probable cause to arrest them.

The arrest was unconventional as the deputies didn’t even use official vehicles but actually had secret ones with Mexican plates and dragged them from their homes in the middle of the night.

But though Arpaio thought he might get away with it, the public made their opinion known and the judge presiding over Larkin and Lacey’s case who normally sided with Arpaio ruled this time that the sheriff had overstepped his legal line.

Larkin and Lacey decided to go even further with their wrongful arrest pardon and took Arpaio to court to sue for damages. After about 6 years of hearings, the courts granted Larkin and Lacey $3 million, the amount of which was used to start the Frontera Fund.

This new foundation still operates like a news organization with stories about immigrants and their communities, but it also works with immigration and human rights reform organization and dedicates a lot of money to lobbying for immigration reform policies.

Michael Lacey Explains why Arpaio was Pardoned

Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin were one of the hundreds of people who say they were illegally arrested by Joe Arpaio. Most of Arpaio’s victims were Latinos and Hispanic-Americans. What makes Larkin and Lacey’s incident so different is that they are two elderly white men who owned their own local business.

Lacey and Larkin were the co-owners of The Phoenix New Times at the time of their arrest. Some of their journalists, under presumed orders from Lacey and Larkin, had been investigating Arpaio and his questionable actions as Sheriff of Maricopa County, Arizona. Eventually, Arpaio had had enough, he sent his deputies in unmarked SUVs to pull Lacey and Larkin out of their homes.

The two were separated and taken to different jails, both under operation of the then time Sheriff Arpaio.

It wasn’t long until people all over the country were reading about their arrests in national publications such as The Washington Post and The New York Times. Readers were furious, their outrage convinced Maricopa County’s county attorney, Andrew Thomas, to call a press conference to announce that the journalist are going free.

Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin sued the county on grounds that their first amendment rights had been violated and the duo went on to take home a 3.75 million dollar settlement.

When it comes to the crimes of Arpaio, cases like the journalist’s is minor league. Arpaio has been accused by many as being responsible for the beatings and torture of inmates in his facilities. Reports from CNN in 2011 suggest that one time a pregnant woman in his care was chained to a bed.

Only a year after he was elected, his most immoral construct came to life. In 1993, he created Tent City with the supposed intent to combat prison over-population. Read more: Jim Larkin | Crunchbase and Michael Lacey | Crunchbase

In reality, Arpaio operated it like a Nazi concentration camp. Reports of inmates being beaten and tortured circulated in publication for the 20 plus years it was allowed to be operated. Finally, in 2017, Tent City was closed down. Arizona began to put Sheriff Joe Arpaio behind them.

2017 was also the year it looked like charges were finally going to stick to Joe Arpaio. In the Summer of 2017, Joe Arpaio was found guilty of contempt of court and was all set to face sentencing.

That’s when Donald Trump, under presumptions that he could make his fanbase happy, pardoned Joe Arpaio. The victims of Arpaio had been taken for a an emotional roller coaster and now would not see justice served. “At the end of the day,” Michael Lacey began, “that sort of racist, brutal, cracker philosophy appealed to enough voters.” he said as he explained the reason he believes Trump gave the pardon. “Trump thinks there’s some political traction to be had by pardoning the guy.”

With Trump’s approval ratings so low, Lacey believes he is trying to please the thirty percent that are still on his side.

Lime Crime Founder Doe Deere Featured in Inspirely

Doe Deere is one of the coolest ladies I have ever heard of. She is the owner and founder of one of the coolest makeup companies I have ever used. The brand is called Lime Crime and it showcases some of the absolute best and luxurious makeup – especially lipstick – that I have ever had the pleasure of using. Not only is the brand affordable, but it is absolutely luscious. As a vegan, I appreciate the fact that ever single item is vegan-friendly and that the entire company is cruelty-free.

One of my favorite things about Doe Deere is that she has never waivered in her commitment to be absolutely sure that her products were always able to be used by vegans and never tested on animals. In fact, her makeup is approved by PETA and the Leaping Bunny association.

Doe Deere was recently featured in an article on Inspirely that utilized a very interesting question and answer format that helped me learn some more about her background and about how Lime Crime came into existence. She told the story of how Lime Crime was developed and I loved hearing the story of how one woman followed her passion and now there is a great line of fun and funky makeup being sold all over the world, and especially to me.

In Doe Deere’s story, she mentions she has always been passionate and highly interested in two things: makeup and fairy tales. She even says she chose the name Lime Crime because it seemed like one of the rhymes that often appear in fairy tales. She said she likes how these rhymes in fairy tales seem to be just for fun. Lime Crime was originally meant to be a clothing company, as Doe Deere has always created her own clothing since she was a little girl. However, when she was studying at a fashion institute, she began to question if clothing was meant to be her life’s work or if it was more of a hobby.

The story goes on that she began designing her own makeup for the simple reason that she could not find the colors and richness she was looking for to do her own makeup. She quickly realized that there were a lot of people out there who were looking for exactly the same style of makeup that she was. Thus, Lime Crime was born and people loved the brand.

The Lime Crime fan base has been said to be almost like a cult of makeup customers. They are incredibly passionate about Lime Crime’s products and go absolutely crazy each time that a new product comes out. For example, Lime Crime just released a line of eyeshadows that are created to look exactly like the ‘90s rage toy, the Polly Pocket. Lime Crime and Doe Deere are never afraid to do things like this and to step out of the box. Perhaps that is one of the reasons that the company has been so successful and developed such a loyal fan base.
